Q: What first drew you to beauty therapy?
A: I didn’t really want to be a beauty therapist at first [laughs]! I wanted to be a window dresser, but Mum told me I had to have some ‘real’ skills behind me (window dressing wasn’t even a thing back then).
So, I did a 12month beauty therapy course and to my surprise, I loved it! I really enjoyed being hands on with people, meeting people and making them feel great about themselves. I had various jobs in salons across Sydney before I used the money my parents gave me for my 21st to rent a little room in the back of a hair salon in Hurstville. From there, Leah’s Waxworks began to grow!
.
Q: You were one of the first in Australia to offer Brazilian Waxing, weren’t you?
A: Yes! Nobody was doing them when we started. I would do a bikini wax and always encourage women to take a little bit more off. Before long, every bikini wax was a Brazilian! Word travelled and I even had women coming from Bondi to Hurstville in their lunchbreak to have one. So, I created another room and employed a few girls and we grew from there! I opened my first Leah’s Waxworks in 1990, in Westfield, Bondi Junction.

Q: What do you love the most about your business?
A: I love how loyal my clients are! I have some clients who have been with me from the very beginning. Some even are now bringing their daughters and even granddaughters in for regular treatments!
I also really love employing people and offering them opportunities. I look after my staff and as such I have a really low staff turnover. Some have been with me for so long, they have taken long service leave twice! My clients know that they will always find their favourite therapist at Leah’s Waxworks.
.
Q: What are the beauty treatments that you can’t live without?
A: I have regular waxing, laser, manicures and pedicures, facials and of course, tanning.
.
Q: What treatments do you think every woman should have?
A: I think regular facials are really important. Having them really helps to maintain the quality of the skin and ward off premature ageing, or it will help address any skin issues a person might have, such as congestion, recurring dryness, acne or whatever it might be. I also think everyone should have lash and brow tinting, as these two treatment frame the eyes and the face beautifully.
.
Q: What is your best beauty tip?
A: Always use sunscreen, drink plenty of water and don’t sunbake – a fake tan is the only safe tan.
